StoreMyPC & Personal Firewalls

Trouble with customized versions of StoreMyPC and Personal Firewalls

Some clients running Zone Alarm as a personal firewall with StoreMyPC Client software that have been customized to install under and display the "<Backup Service Company>" name, have had a few false alarms and concerns of "unknown software" running on the client machine. Trouble is, when ZoneAlarm alerts users to a new port being accessed, the software is identified as "NovaNet-Web Client" instead of the "<Backup Service Company>".

Unfortunately, there is no way to change the "real" program name with respect to Zone Alarm. The customization only changes the apparent name...the name the user actually sees.

The StoreMyPC customization does not change the compiled name of the application, and will always be "seen" as NovaNet-WEB Client by these types of firewalls. So, if the customized version of StoreMyPC is to be used, they must register it as NovaNet-WEB Client regardless of the customized name.

There are a number of these personal firewall applications including BlackIce, Zone Alarm and Norton that will give the same notification. Most of them give you the option to register "safe" applications.

To correct this, you will need to add "NovaNet-WEB Client" as a permitted, "safe" application within your personal firewall software.
